Breathe in and out and notice

Five
things you can see
cracked floorboards stretch away
hair balls simmer along
skirting boards iced with dust
lost socks marooned
under my bed

Four
things you can hear
downstairs’ TV muffling
outsides’ traffic distancing
my breathing suffocating
rain falling

Three
things you can touch
cracks between the cracked floorboards
the pounding of my chest
the hollow of my neck

Two
things you can smell
chicken roast remnants
fear? sorry, serious answer, soap

One
thing you can taste
your minty breath from before you left

  1. What a powerful message here! I love the structure of the poem! Thanks for sharing. Because mindfulness is such an important part of being present and being present is such a big part of being seen, heard, loved, and giving back those things. I admire this post a lot!

  2. This is a great poem! I love that you’ve demonstrated how to be mindful in a simple poem that expresses different senses and emotions. It’s really as simple as that, directing the attention to the things you’re conscious of at the moment, but not always easy. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

  3. I adore this!! It’s a tool for someone panicking that’s not only soothing, but provides a distraction for them as they can write their own poem!! Mindfulness truly is a powerful weapon against panic!
